George & James consists of covers of works by George Gershwin () and James Brown (). The album notes include a brief introduction to the American Composers Series concept followed by brief biographies of the two artists and of The Residents, describing them as "a group of pseudo-artists who freely indulge themselves in the Great American Culture". This record, George and James, is a little bit of both extremes. The Residents' approach to both of the musicians they pay tribute to on here, George Gershwin and James Brown, is highly unique, yet I don't think a lot of this record holds up well under repeat listens. The Residents are best when they are deconstructing someone else's music/5. Reply

The Gershwin tracks are minimalist deconstructions sounding a bit clinical although they have their eerie and atmospheric phases. The James Brown interpretations have their amusing moments, especially in the audience participation and I suppose they go a long way to deconstructing James Brown' legendary Live At The Apollo set, but of course it lacks soulfulness, thereby completely missing out /5(11).
